What Are the Main Types of Intestinal Diseases? What Do They Cause?

Common types:

  • Norovirus: causes acute gastroenteritis (vomiting, diarrhea).

  • Rotavirus: the main pathogen of diarrhea in children.

  • Enterovirus 71 (EV71): causes hand, foot and mouth disease (herpes, fever).

  • Coxsackievirus: may cause herpetic pharyngitis or myocarditis.

How to Prevent Intestinal Infection?

Personal protection:

  • Wash your hands frequently (especially after going to the toilet and before eating).

  • Avoid contact with vomitus/excrement of patients (handle and disinfect with gloves).


Environmental disinfection:

  • Use chlorine-containing disinfectants (such as 84) to clean contaminated surfaces.

  • Boiling dishes and toys at high temperature for disinfection.

  • Vaccine: Rotavirus vaccine (oral) can prevent severe diarrhea in infants and young children.
