According to the latest World Malaria Report, there will be 263 million malaria cases in 2023, compared to 252 million in 2022. Malaria deaths are projected to be 597 000 in 2023, compared to 600 000 in 2022.
The WHO African Region continues to carry a disproportionately high share of the global malaria burden. In 2023, the Region accounted for approximately 94% of all malaria cases and 95% of all deaths. Children under 5 years of age accounted for 76% of all malaria deaths in the Region.
More than half of these deaths occurred in four countries: Nigeria (30.9%), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (11.3%), Niger (5.9%) and the United Republic of Tanzania (4.3%).
